Whether you choose to make a monetary gift or donate much-needed supplies, your generosity helps provide food, shelter, medical care, and comfort for animals waiting to find their forever homes. We depend on your generous support to help the animals. There are many ways you can contribute. The list below contains items that we need to provide the best care for the animals waiting for their home forever. HART replies on donations from caring folks like you. But sometimes we are overwhelmed by the amount and the contents of the donations. Here is a list of what we are in need of and what we cannot use. Please observe this list as it is very costly to dispose of things that we cannot use. Maybe another nonprofit organization could benefit from the items you are willing to donate, so check with them.
Note: When we get boxes of household items that we cannot use for the animals, we have to pay to dispose of them. So please keep this in mind when you are donating.
Online Wish List
Our Amazon Wish List makes it easy to provide the food, cleaning supplies, bedding, toys, and other essentials our animals need every day. Choose an item from the list, and Amazon can ship your donation directly to HART.
Cat Furniture
We gladly accept cat trees, scratching posts, and other cat furniture that is in good condition.
Please make sure all cat furniture is thoroughly cleaned and free of pet hair before donating.
Dog Treats
Because we have no rodent secure place to store treats, we ask for a limited amount of dog treats such as milk bones etc. If you donate these, please make sure they are in a sealed bag.
Dog & Cat Food
Due to the poor physical condition the majority of animals are in when they come to HART, we feed only premium food to them. So, please keep that in mind when you are donating food. Also to ensure the safety of the animals we can no longer accept open bags of food or treats. Quality nutrition is critical in the care of shelter animals.
For the safety and health of our animals, we can only accept:
- Premium-quality dog and cat food
- Unopened bags or cans of food
- Food that has not expired
KONG® Toys
KONG® rubber toys are one of our dogs' favorite enrichment items.
Everyday all the dogs receive a Kong (rubber toy) filled with frozen canned dog food, as a treat. These Kongs keep the dogs busy and they love them.
New or gently used KONG® toys are always appreciated.

Estate Planning

Have You Made Plans for Your Pet?
Plan for the unexpected to ensure the welfare of yourbeloved pet if you should become unable to care for it.
Your pet brings you unconditional love and companionship and is an integral member of your family. But what about when you are gone? What happens to our pets if something happens to us? Despite how we may feel about them, our legal system views pets as property, making it all the more important to plan ahead.
Benefits of a Pet Trust
Including pet provisions in your will is helpful. A pet trust can be even more advantageous, allowing you to:
- Designate a caregiver and backup caregivers for your pet; Appoint a separate trustee to oversee the caregiver and ensure they are following your directives
- Specify your pet’s needs and customary lifestyle, including health care, diet, exercise, special needs, and end-of-life plans
- Provide different options for covering your pet’s expenses to ensure the money is used as intended
- Protect the money you set aside for your pet by shielding it from many creditors or estranged spouses
- Provide immediate and uninterrupted care for your pet without the need for court intervention in the event you pass away or become ill
- Allocate any remaining money to specific people or charitable groups, such as Heartland Animal Rescue Team.

How to Protect Your Pets
- Carry a “pet alert card” in your wallet, identifying your pet, vital information, and contacts in case you suffer an emergency that prevents your return home.
- Post “in case of emergency” stickers on your doors or windows to notify emergency workers of pets inside. The ASPCA provides free decals upon request.
- Discuss your wishes for your pets with relatives or friends. Designate a temporary caregiver in the event something unexpected happens to you and ensure they have instructions for how to care for your pets.
