" Name That Dog"
Next Year's Young at HART Theme
As this year's
Young at HART season draws to a close, our thoughts
start focusing on next year. This season's focus has
been "Family Pets" and explored alternatives to dogs and
cats. Birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchilla's,
aquarium pets, snakes and even animals that should not
be household pets have been discussed. For the 2012-2013
school year, which runs from October to May, dogs will
receive our full attention. What is meant by breed? What
breeds fall into various classes, such as the hunters,
hounds, working dogs and tiny dogs? What characteristics
do the members of a breed have in common? And if a dog
is a mixed breed, what are its potentials?
As always, the
lessons will be followed by a related craft, visit with
the HART animals, snack and story time. Children, aged
4-11, are eligible to attend. Registration forms will be
available beginning August 1 on the HART website and at
HART. The class will start the first Saturday of October
at 10:00 a.m.
Youth Education
Continues to Grow
HART's education
program has grown in leaps and bounds over the last six
years. Young at HART was resurrected after many years
and has become a flourishing class for children ages
4-11. Summer camps have been initiated, and groups of
students from the community are taking advantage of
HART's willingness to share information not only about
HART's mission but about the responsibilities of pet
ownership. An increasing number of Girl and Boy Scout
troops are coming to HART to learn about shelter work
while church and school groups wishing to do volunteer
work participate in an hour long education session.
Another activity
that is growing in popularity is celebrating birthdays
at HART. We supply decorations, gift bags, games and
prizes, snacks, as well as a lesson and shelter tour
while the birthday child forfeits personal gifts in lieu
of gifts for the shelter.
Educating our
community's children on animal issues is a primary goal
of HART. In recognition of the importance of children in
building a better future for animals, the focus of our
25th anniversary celebration is a kids' carnival and
petting zoo. We hope to see many of our past, present
and future students on August 11.
