"Only thirty
schools offer programs in veterinary medicine compared to hundreds
offering programs for
medical doctors." This incredible fact was only one piece of
information presented by
Dr. Molly Anderson
Krahn regarding the difficulties of getting accepted into vet school.
Dr. Anderson Krahn was one of the experts who shared tips about animal
care careers with the participants of HART's first Follow Your HART
camp. Participants ranging in age from 12-17 spent August 18 visiting
facilities and talking with experts about occupations in animal
boarding, training, and care. They spoke with owners of a boarding
kennel, pet store and training facility as well as a vet, vet tech,
kennel manager, groomer, shelter manager and animal control officer.
Three of the students are opting for careers as a vet while the others
thought careers as a dog trainer, vet tech or groomer might be good
choices for them. One career they all decided to shun was that of
animal control officer. After Don Hannahs, our area 's animal control
officer, mentioned he had been bitten 274 times while on the job, the
dangers of his job frightened all of us.
Students
from as far away as Bemidji took part in the day's activities.
According to Morgan Lootes, the Bemidji student, "It was an amazing
day." HART's teaching staff wants to thank Pampered Pet Boarding Kennel
owner, Donna Wambeke, Carol Manley's Canine Tutor owner, Carol Manley,
Animal House owner, Linda Beach, the staff of Lakeland Veterinary
Hospital, Don Hannah's and the HART staff for making this extended field
trip possible. Hopefully they will join with us again next summer in
offering this rich career exploration experience to Lakes Area students.
