We have the
land, the plans, and the enthusiasm, but the economy has
put us on hold. That is the current status of the
capital campaign to fund a new building. Although the
HART Board agrees the construction of a new building is
our number one goal, we also know people in the Lakes
Area are struggling to keep their homes out of
foreclosure and feed their families. The community, time
and again, has stepped forward to help us through
difficult times at the shelter, and rather than ask for
more now, we are looking for ways we can return the
support.
We have a
program in place to support seniors with pets and are
offering scholarships for our education classes. We are
willing to work with homeless people who need shelter
for their pets. And, of course, we are seeing an influx
of animals from people who can no longer afford to feed
them.
Yes, a new
building will be great. But first let's get people back
on their feet, and then it will be full speed ahead.
